April 14, 2014 – appointed an acting Head of the Republic of Crimea by Edict of RF President Vladimir Putin. In connection with this, the State Council of the Republic prematurely terminated S. Aksionov's parliamentary powers.

October 9, 2014 – elected Head of the Republic of Crimea.

On September 18, 2016, on the single voting day, he was elected a member of the State Duma (Parliament) of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the VII convocation, but he refused the mandate. The mandate was transferred to Nataliya Poklonskaya, the then prosecutor of Crimea.

On June 14, 2019, he headed the list of the UNITED RUSSIA party to the State Council of the Republic of Crimea of the second convocation.

On July 19, 2019, Andrey Turchak, secretary of the General Council of the UNITED RUSSIA, stated that after the parliamentary elections in Crimea, the party would propose the candidacy of Sergey Aksionov for a second term.

On September 20, 2019, Sergey Aksionov was re-elected as the Head of Crimea for a five-year term, until 2024.

In February 2023, he established his own paramilitary structure, the CONVOY PMC, to participate in the invasion of Ukraine."
